PriWatt Film for the first US-based NHK World Japan-News Studio
A newsroom that is a backdrop when the camera is on
NHK World-Japan built its first US on-air studio and newsroom in New York, with Provost Studio on the design. A broadcast space has two jobs at once: it has to look right behind a presenter, and it has to let the people in it work when the light is off them.
Glass that changes with the segment
PriWatt switchable film was integrated into the studio glazing. Powered, the film is clear and the newsroom behind it becomes the shot: depth, movement, a working room instead of a printed backdrop. Unpowered, the liquid crystals scatter the light, the glass goes opaque, and the same room is private while a story is being prepared.

Installation
The New York team fitted the film into a studio already full of technology and finishes, to a broadcaster’s tolerances: the glass had to switch cleanly, look right on camera and keep doing both on a daily schedule.
