What these projects show

Fifteen buildings, and what each one had to solve

These are PriWatt installations in service — offices, clinics, museums, studios, a pharmaceutical plant, a network television set and two waterfront railings. Read together they answer the questions a specifier asks before a product: whether it retrofits, whether it goes outside, whether it survives a cleanroom, and what it looks like when the power is off.

Retrofit onto glass already in the building

Most of these projects did not replace a single pane. Self-adhesive switchable film goes onto the existing partition, which is why the buildings stayed in use while it was done.

At GE Vernova the glass partitions were kept and made switchable across offices, a conference room and the boardroom, in a working office. At the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda the film went onto the existing partitions, giving conference rooms that close without new glazing. At Stanford it went onto the observation walls of surgical suites — privacy without curtains, and no area closed for construction. Summerwood kept its partitions and gained private offices that close at the wall, and a two-sided conference room at Vision Wealth closes in under a second from a handheld remote.

Reverse mode, where the default state is clear

Where a space is transparent most of the time, the glass should be transparent when nothing is switched on. Eighty feet of reverse smart glass railing at a North Palm Beach residence is clear over the water by default and private around the pool at a switch; a New York waterfront terrace does the same with the panorama. At the Jim Moran Foundation in Fort Lauderdale the reverse glass is clear with no power and private at a press — and available in bronze and grey rather than only white.

Exterior glazing, and demanding environments

Not every project is an interior partition. DLC switchable film went onto the exterior storefront of the Titleist Performance Institute: daylight in the training rooms, no view in from the car park. At West Pharmaceutical the panels are cleanroom viewing windows — staff supervise from outside, and confidential work is screened. A Toronto investment firm specified glass that gives privacy on demand at Rw 35–36 dB and doubles as a rear-projection screen.

Where the glass is the idea

At the Royal Ontario Museum a display case stays opaque until a visitor presses a button, which turns an exhibit into something you choose to open. In NHK World-Japan’s first US studio the newsroom is the backdrop when the camera is on and private when it is not. On the set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, built at CBS Stages Canada, it is the chief medical officer’s office. And a New Jersey law firm, Lomurro Law, replaced blinds with switchable glass in the meeting rooms and private offices.

A project like one of these

Send the drawings, the dimensions, or the room. PriWatt manufactures the glass and the film in Pompano Beach, Florida, and the first conversation is technical — which mode, which format, and what the installation actually takes. (833) 333-8556.
