PriWatt switchable glass in a paediatric consulting room
A room with a child, a parent and a clinician in it
Paediatrics changes the privacy question in a way adult medicine does not. There are always at least three people in the room, the appointment is with one of them and about another, and a child who can see out of a glazed room is a child who is less frightened of being in it.
PriWatt switchable glass was fitted in Dr Alberto Cotton’s consulting room at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital: transparent while that helps, opaque for the examination.
Why a paediatric room wants to be glazed most of the time
- A child can see the corridor, and a parent in the corridor can see the child — which is the whole of the reassurance
- Staff can tell a room is occupied, and how, without opening a door onto an appointment
- The clinician is visible to colleagues, which is a safeguarding consideration as well as a clinical one
- The room is lit by borrowed daylight rather than by a ceiling, which matters when a child is in it for an hour
Then, for a few minutes of that hour, none of it applies: an examination happens, or a conversation a family should have without an audience. Those minutes are the reason the glass switches, and they are why a permanently frosted panel — the usual answer — throws away everything in the list above to solve something that is intermittent.
The state it should hold with no power
In a room where a child may be undressed, this is not an energy question. Normal-mode glass is private with no power and clear only while it is switched, so a supply interruption leaves the room opaque — which is the correct way for a clinical room to fail, and the reason normal mode rather than reverse mode is usually right in a treatment setting even though the room spends most of its day clear.
It is the opposite of the answer for an office, and it is the clearest example on this site of why the question is asked as a behaviour — "what should this room do if the power goes off" — rather than as a product name.
Switched from inside
The clinician closes the room from where they are standing. Nobody reaches past a child on a couch to draw anything.
Nothing a child can operate
No cords, no rail, no fabric within reach. In a paediatric room that is a safety consideration and not only a tidiness one.
Nothing to launder
There is no textile in the room and the surface is cleaned with the glazing. That is the whole of the hygiene argument, and this site makes no larger one.
What is not claimed
The version published elsewhere has a section on infection control, arguing that switchable glass reduces contamination points. PriWatt does not make that claim and it is not made here. Infection control is a protocol, and what a material can contribute to it is narrow: there is no fabric in the room, and one fewer item leaves it to be laundered on a schedule somebody has to keep.
Nor does the switchable layer do anything acoustically. A consulting room that has to be unheard as well as unseen is a glazing specification — the build-up, the head and sill and the junction with the ceiling — and it is settled before any switchable product is ordered. The same point is made on the Moffitt Cancer Center page, where the source claimed the opposite.
