Watching a cleanroom without walking into it
Pharmaceutical manufacturing is built on three things that pull against each other: you have to see the process, keep it sterile, and keep some of what happens around it confidential. Switchable glass lets one panel serve all three.
Visibility is the point — until it isn’t
Viewing panels exist so that supervision does not require entry. Every person who walks into a controlled zone to look at something is a risk the room was designed to avoid, and a gowning cycle nobody wanted to spend.
The same panels, though, are open on routine work and on the meetings and procedures that should stay between the people in them. Blinds are not an option in a cleanroom, and fixed frosted glass would remove the oversight the panel exists to provide.
What was installed
Laminated smart glass
- Into new-construction zones and the cleanroom viewing panels
- Durable, with acoustic insulation, and private at a press
Self-adhesive smart film
- Applied to partitions and windows that were already in the building
- A retrofit: the existing glass stays where it is
- Wired to wall switches and to the automation that runs the rest of the room
Both switch from clear to opaque in under a second, by hand or automatically, and both are certified to UL 962, ASTM E662, SMP 800-C and ASTM E1354.
What it changes in a controlled environment
- Critical zones are monitored from outside, so fewer people go in
- A smooth, non-porous surface that takes the facility’s own disinfection routine
- No fabric, cords or slats anywhere in the sterile envelope
- Confidential work screened without closing the room off permanently
- UV and infrared held back, which steadies internal temperature and eases the HVAC load
