PriWatt film retrofitted to exterior windows at Baptist Health South Miami

Baptist Health South Miami Hospital · PriWatt PDLC film

Privacy on the outside wall, not on a partition

Most switchable glazing in a hospital is internal — an observation window, a consulting room, a partition onto a corridor. This one is the building envelope: exterior-facing windows serving laboratory spaces and clinical offices at Baptist Health South Miami, in Miami-Dade County.

PriWatt PDLC film was retrofitted over the existing glazing. No window was replaced.

Why an exterior window is a different problem

Interior partitionExterior window
Who is being kept outColleagues and visitors inside the buildingAnyone outside it — an adjacent block, a walkway, a car park
What is lost when it closesA sightline across the planDaylight and a view, which is the reason the window is there
When it is neededFor a meetingFor a procedure, a specimen, a conversation — and at unpredictable times
What else the glazing is doingNothing structuralWeather, thermal and often impact performance, none of which the film may compromise

The fourth row is the one that decides the product. An exterior pane in South Florida is part of the envelope, and in Miami-Dade the impact requirements on that envelope are the strictest in the country. A retrofit onto the inboard face leaves the pane, its rating and its glazing system exactly as approved, which is the argument for film and against replacing the unit.

Applying film does not change what the glass is rated as — in either direction. It adds nothing to the rating and it takes nothing away, and the assembly is still the assembly that was approved. That principle is set out on safety glazing and code.

The thing a blind cannot do on this wall

A laboratory or a clinical office glazed to the outside has a genuine dilemma, and it is not solved by a roller shade. Closed, the shade takes the daylight and the view — the two things the window was for — and it takes them for the whole day, because nobody raises and lowers a blind six times between procedures.

Private without going dark

The private state scatters light rather than blocking it, so a room that cannot be seen into is still lit by its own window.

Changed as often as needed

A state change costs nothing and takes under a second, so the glazing can follow the work instead of being set once in the morning.

Nothing added to a clinical room

No fabric, no cassette above the window, no cords. One fewer item in the room and one fewer thing in a cleaning schedule.

That third point is the hygiene argument at its real size, and it is enough on its own. This site does not describe the product as antibacterial and does not claim it controls infection — a surface that is wiped with the rest of the glazing, and one fewer launderable item in the room, is a true statement and a useful one.

The same windows switched to their private state

What to settle on an envelope retrofit

  • What the existing pane is — laminated, insulated, coated — and which face the film goes on, because it goes inboard
  • Whether the unit is part of an approved impact assembly, and who signs off that a retrofit leaves the approval intact
  • Which state the glazing holds with no power, which on an exterior clinical window is a patient-dignity decision
  • Where power reaches a window frame nobody designed to carry a cable
  • Solar exposure and the film’s rated range, −20 to 60 °C, on a facade in South Florida

Where the requirement turns out to be solar rather than privacy, the product changes: DLC dynamic shading switches between a tinted clear state and a deep dark one and is made for facades, with the transmission figures published in the technical reference.

Specified on this project

PriWatt PDLC switchable film

Self-adhesive film applied to glass already in the building. Private unpowered, clear when switched.

Healthcare and clinics

Observation walls, consulting rooms and imaging suites.

Switchable windows

Exterior glazing, where solar gain matters as much as privacy.

A project like this one

A clinical floor with exterior glazing, a laboratory on an outside wall, or any window overlooked from beyond the building. PriWatt manufactures switchable glass and film in Pompano Beach, Florida, and every project is quoted from its own drawings — send dimensions, or a photograph with the sizes marked on it.
